Daniel B. Spitzer regularly advises clients throughout greater Los Angeles regarding business litigation and commercial transactions. Areas of concentration include insurance coverage, professional liability, business torts and contractual disputes; disputes among partners, shareholders, and members of business entities; secured transactions; and commercial collections, bankruptcy, and other insolvency matters. Mr. Spitzer also carries on a wide-ranging real property practice in areas such as development and construction, mechanics’ liens and stop notices, condominium practice, commercial leasing, housing discrimination, broker liability, and disclosure issues.
Mr. Spitzer conducts litigation matters at all levels of CaliforniaState courts, as well as in the U.S. District Courts, U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, and a variety of administrative settings. Mr. Spitzer was admitted to practice in California in 1985, and has since been admitted pro hac vice before courts in Arizona and Nevada, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Spitzer received his J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 1985. He received his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, and a masters degree in Comparative Literature, from UCLA. During his graduate years, Mr. Spitzer, who is fluent in Hebrew, was a Charles Brown Visiting Scholar at the HebrewUniversity in Jerusalem. Mr. Spitzer also holds a certificate from Pepperdine University School of Law in mediation practice.
Mr. Spitzer has been involved in a number of high-profile cases. Among others, see the U.S. Bankruptcy Court’s decision in In re Bosse, 122 B. R. 410 (Bankr.C.D. Cal. 1990); and the California Court of Appeals decisions in Okrand v. City of Los Angeles (1989) 207 Cal.App.3d 566, Leasequip vs. Dapeer (2002) 103 Cal. App. 4th 394, and Lynn Doe vs. Elizabeth Luster (2006) 145 Cal. App. 4th 139.
At UCLA, Mr. Spitzer published Contra Goff: Of Retirement Trusts and Bankruptcy Code Section 541(c)(2), 32 UCLA Law Review 1266 (1985). Since that time, Mr. Spitzer has authored articles on unlawful detainer practice, updates to the Bankruptcy Code, and developments in California real property law. In 2006, Mr. Spitzer was a featured contributor (with a chapter entitled, “Beyond a Reasonable Order”) to Larry King’s book, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.
Since 2000, Mr. Spitzer has been a member of the Los Angeles County Superior Court’s civil mediation panel, and has an active private practice mediating a variety of civil and business disputes. He is an active member of the Community Associations Institute, Los Angeles County Bar Association, and San Fernando Valley Bar Association, and has held a number of positions with Valley Beth Shalom Synagogue and the Jewish Federation-Council of Greater Los Angeles. In 2000, Mr. Spitzer was honored by the Los Angeles Bureau of Jewish Education for his years of work with youth and in Israel education.
